5 Tips for a Successful Michigan Wine Tour

 In CGT Blog

There has never been a better time to take a wine tour in Michigan. With over 120 wineries spanning statewide, Michigan is quickly rising among the top wine regions in the United States and the world. Factor in pristine freshwater lakes, coastal sand dunes, farm-to-table restaurants, and stunning scenery in every direction for the perfect wine-lover’s getaway. Here are a few tips to ensure you get the most out of your Michigan wine tour experience:

1. Go in with an open mind

Michigan has a unique climate for growing grapes, which means you might stumble upon some styles you’ve never tried before. Just because you’re in a committed relationship with that California Chardonnay doesn’t mean you won’t find a new favorite. Throw stereotypes and expectations to the wind and let yourself be (pleasantly) surprised.

2. Start early and take your time

One of the best parts of going on a wine tour is getting an up-close-and-personal chance to talk to the experts. For most Michigan tasting rooms, peak hours are weekends and afternoons – so get your day started early and beat the crowd! You’ll also give yourself plenty of time between wineries to stop at a roadside stand for cherries or take a quick hike in our wooded wonderlands.

3. Eat something between wineries

Known for our freshwater lakes, endless beaches and of course, excellent wine, Michigan is quickly becoming known as a popular foodie destination. Take advantage of the local restaurants around the wine trail for breakfast or lunch – your (nonexistent) hangover will thank you later!

4.  Designate a driver

Or hire a local tour company to guide you safely on your way. Sipping through four to six samples at each winery may not seem like much, but those sips add up quickly. With most wine trails in Michigan boasting over 8 wineries, you won’t want to take the risk of having too much.  Make your travel plans ahead of time to ensure a safe and relaxed wine tasting experience.

5.  Ask questions

Tastings rooms are the perfect place for you to buff up on your wine trivia. Go ahead and ask the wine-related questions that you’ve always wanted to know the answer to: How do I pair food and wine?  Where do those berry flavors come from? When do you harvest the grapes? And don’t worry about asking a silly question – tasting room staff are eager to share their wine wizardry! Feel free to inquire about the basics because there is no judgment on the wine trail.

Finally, sit back and savor the experience that can only be had along Michigan’s wine trails. For more information about touring the Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula, click here.
