How many grapes does it take to make a bottle of wine?
Each year, somebody will invariably ask us this same question… After years of not knowing, we put a calculator to the test. Check out our video for the results!
SHOWING OUR WORK:
1 acre of grapes contains approximately 1075 vines.
1 vine contains approximately 30-40 clusters.
1 cluster contains about 130 grapes
4 clusters / pound
8,000 grape clusters/ton
1 ton yields approximately 170 gallons of finished juice
1 case contains 2.37753 gallons
Which yields about 72 cases or 864 bottles…
Which means it takes approximately 111 clusters to yield a case or 9.25 clusters/bottle
Which, at 130 grapes per cluster, means…
It takes approximately 1,204 grapes to make a bottle of wine.
Does that number surprise you? Share it with your friends next time you’re sipping on a a nice glass of wine. Cheers!
